400 × 200For decades, Toyota has used pretty standard and uniform nomenclature to designate trim levels of vehicles.  LE was the entry level or base level, XLE was the one with more of the goodies, and the Limited was the top of the line.

LE.  Basic.  Lacking in features.  Boy, I wish it had X, Y, and Z.

Well, you can no longer say that about the LE.  Especially on the 2020 Toyota Highlander.  Let’s take a look at what this “basic” level gets you.

Let’s start on the exterior.  The lights are all LED:  headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights.  This will give you the vision you need for safe nighttime driving. Mudguards are standard so no extra charge if you want those.  A power liftgate with height adjustable memory is standard making loading and unloading easier.  18” wheels give the LE a finished look instead of a lacking one.  The backup camera even comes with its own washer!  The windshield wiper de-icer grid helps your winter driving vision too. Smart Key entry means no digging for your keys.

Now let’s move to the interior.  Three zone climate control (with parental override) keeps all occupants comfy.  The standard Audio system is anything but basic.  It comes with an 8” touchscreen, Bluetooth phone/audio of course, HD radio, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and Alexa integration, Sirius XM (3 month free trial), in-cabin WiFi, Safety Connect, Remote Connect (app based phone remote car starter – and more), and of course advanced voice recognition.  You get 5 USB ports so no fighting over who gets to charge and who is at what % battery…  You get seating for 8 with a power driver seat.  Push button start makes life easier too.

Let’s talk safety for a bit.  The 2020 Highlander LE comes with a bevy of standard safety features:

  • Blind Spot Monitors
  • Rear Cross-traffic alert
  • Star Safety System – ABS, Electronic brake-force distribution, Vehicle Stability Control, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Smart Stop Technology
  • Toyota Safety Sense – Pre-collision with automatic braking, Pedestrian Detection, Bicyclist Detection, Full-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Trace Assist, Auto High Beams, and Road Sign Assist.
  • Downhill Assist Control
  • Hill Start Assist Control
  • Electronic Parking Brake
  • 8 airbags
  • Engine immobilizer with alarm
  • Trailer-Sway Control

Mechanically the 2020 Highlander LE will not disappoint.  The 3.5L engine puts out a whopping 295 horsepower and when paired with the 8 speed automatic transmission still gives you an EPA estimated 27 mpg highway.  The Highlander is ready for more than just the road too.  It comes standard with Snow mode as well as Multi-Terrain Select with settings for Mud/Sand and Rock/Dirt. You can also set the Drive mode from Normal to Eco or Sport to tailor your driving experience to your driving preference.  You will be capable of towing 5000 pounds (once you add a hitch and wiring.)

Like all new Toyota vehicles, the Highlander will give you ToyotaCare.  This includes your first 5 scheduled maintenance intervals covered under warranty at no charge.  This is good for 2 years or 25,000 miles (whichever comes first.)  You will also get 2 years/unlimited mileage roadside assistance.
